
Environmental Impact Assessment
The aim of this module is to provide an insight into and conceptual knowledge of contemporary techniques for environmental appraisal applicable to private, public and voluntary sector enterprises.
On completion of the module you will be able to:
- interpret the concept of sustainable development and comment on the implications for environmental policy and management
- define and outline the components of environmental impact assessment and evaluate its role in planning for sustainability
- assess the role of description, analysis, prediction and evaluation in EIA decision-making and relate these to specific techniques
- explain the role of environmental impact assessment in the British planning system and the broader European context
- distinguish between project-based EIA, strategic environmental assessment and sustainability appraisal
- characterise and judge the relative merits of contemporary developments in the field of EIA
