School of Environment & Life Sciences
Peel Building at night - home to the School of Environment & Life Sciences

The School is housed in the majestic Peel Building, at the heart of the campus, adjacent to the main library, students’ union and sports centre (complete with climbing wall and pool). Several coffee and food outlets are close by.

The School covers a range of academic disciplines across all areas of biology, environment, environmental health, geography and wildlife conservation, supported by recently-refurbished laboratories (check out our virtual tour) and well-equipped field sites. Lecture theatres and teaching rooms have also been upgraded, including fully networked computer suites and widespread wi-fi. The School is a thriving centre and each year welcomes about 300 students to our various full-time undergraduate degree courses. We have more than 40 academic staff, many of whom are nationally- and internationally-known for their research expertise, which helps keep our course content up to date. We aim to provide small and friendly tutorial groups and well-staffed laboratory classes.

We offer a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and research opportunities in subjects as diverse as Bioscience; Human Biology; Parasitology; Environmental Health; Geography & Environment; Wildlife, Conservation & Zoo Biology, Environmental Management; and Housing & Regeneration.

The School is also one of the top for Bioscience teaching in the UK, receiving an impressive 24 out of 24 teaching quality score.

A number of our courses are accredited by professional institutions, or have links with public and private sector organisations which allow work placement opportunities, and there are also opportunities for study overseas.

In addition to our high-quality taught programmes, our staff use their expertise in cutting-edge research and Academic Enterprise activity in both the UK and abroad.
